Author: Kelly Hashway

Find the fortune, break the curse!

The hunt is on for an ancient treasure tied to nine-year-old J.B.’s family history. He’s been having visions that make him sweaty, lightheaded, and certain he’s turning into some kind of freak—or worse, going insane. But things are worse than he imagined. The visions stem from a family curse. An ancient ancestor was accused of stealing the massive Granville fortune, and now J.B.’s entirely family will suffer.

To break the curse, J.B. must find and return the Granville’s stolen property. But he’s not the only one searching for the treasure. As he sets out on his journey through a dark and foreboding forest, he’ll battle his worst fears and fight terrifying creatures along the way. And when he meets two others who share the missing pieces of his visions and suffer from the same curse, the three soon realize they need to work together to break the curse before it’s too late.

Kelly Hashway grew up reading R.L. Stein’s Fear Street novels and writing stories of her own, so it was no surprise to her family when she majored in English and later obtained a masters degree in English Secondary Education from East Stroudsburg University. After teaching middle school language arts for seven years, Hashway went back to school and focused specifically on writing. She is now the author of three young adult series, one middle grade series, and several picture books. She also writes contemporary romance under the pen name Ashelyn Drake. When she isn’t writing, Hashway works as a freelance editor for small presses as well as for her own list of clients. In her spare time, she enjoys running, traveling, and volunteering with the PTO. Hashway currently resides in Pennsylvania with her husband, daughter, and  two pets.

And now for the interview with the awesome Kelly Hashway.

Cassandra Jones:  What is your favorite genre to read?

Kelly Hashway:  I love paranormal/fantasy. There’s something about a world that’s similar to ours but more fantastic that really draws me in. I find it a great way to escape for a while

CJ: Are there any authors who inspire you?

KH: Rick Riordan is my idol. To say I love the Percy Jackson series is an understatement. I have sticky notes all over those books and reread parts all the time for inspiration.

CJ: What is your favorite book?

KH: My favorite MG title would have to be Percy Jackson and the Titan’s Curse. The first line of that book is phenomenal and I couldn’t put the book down after that.

CJ: If you weren't writing, what would you be doing?

KH: Editing, reading, or playing with my daughter. That’s pretty much my day. Write, edit for clients or the bookpublisher I work for, read a good book, and play with my daughter when she gets home from school.

CJ: Who is your go-to author?

KH: Rick Riordan. If a book has his name on it, I know it’s going to be good.

CJ: What do you see yourself doing in the next ten years?

KH: Writing more books. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. I love going to work every day, and you can’t ask for more than that.

CJ:  Where do you get your ideas for stories?

KH: I find inspiration everywhere. My daughter is always giving me ideas for stories. Sometimes she asks me to write about certain things, and other times I’m just inspired by something she says or does. She’s so creative. That’s why I dedicate all my books to her.

CJ:  What advice would you give someone trying to get published?

KH:Read, read, and read some more. It’s the best way to research the craft and the market. Plus it’s fun!
